Pneumococcal meningitis, 4 months after

Well, it's been 4months since I had severe pneumococcal meningitis (it was severe according to my hospital records which I have only seen an extract from).

I still feel incredibly tired all the time, get severe headaches, backache, and I do take regular naps, I have also lost all the hearing in my left ear which has caused me to be almost run over on a few occasions now, only today I stepped onto the road not realising there was a car coming, I heard it in my right ear and assumed it was on a different road, I didn't realise it was on my left and a lot closer than I realised.

I would like to get my hands on my hospital records and wonder if this is possible with a freedom of information request?,or is there any other way I can access my records?, I think this will help me make sense of what happened as I can't remember, I need to know if I was assaulted prior to contracting this diesease as that would put me in an "at risk" group as well as having an ear infection. The doctor/neurologist told me I had fallen over but in my report it says I was assaulted?, I can't remember a thing and it's really playing on my mind.

Because of my hearing problems, I can no longer hear my baby crying at night and no-one is willing to help us financially to pay for specialist equipment to help me in my daily life, I also need a flashing fire alarm as I cannot hear it and we live on the top floor so I would have no chance of escape if there was a real fire.

I am considering applying for a financial grant from the trust to help pay for a vibrating baby monitor and flashing fire alarm but I don't think a charity should be responsible for this?, surely the government should help in some way?

This is really getting me down and putting a great strain on my relationship, I want to get back to work but I am still taking regular naps throughout the day and I have to be very careful with my remaining hearing so I can no longer work in a noisy environment.

Times are hard and I just feel like there is no help available.

Hi
Yes, you can ask to see your medical records. Make a request, in writing or by email, and send this to the health records manager or patient services manager at your local hospital trust. You do not need to give a reason for asking to see your records. Further information about accessing your records can be found here: http://www.nhs.uk/chq/pages/1309.aspx?categoryid=68&subcategoryid=160

However, it may be more helpful for you to ask your GP for an appointment to see the hospital consultant who treated you. You will then have someone who can help you to understand what happened.

With regards to a financial grant from the Trust, please do apply. Our financial grants are available to help anyone with needs which are as a direct result of meningitis and we make the process as easy as possible.

Remember we are here to help you in any way that we can.

RE: Pneumococcal meningitis, 4 months after

This may sound strange but I will explain as best as I can.
The night I fell ill, I allready had a sore ear, I was trying to make it pop by holding my nose and blowing, something happened to my ear that night and it has never been the same since.
When I started to come round in hospital I had a strange sensation in both my ears every time I swallowed, burped or sometimes just when I moved my head or neck. It's similar to when you stifle a yawn and you feel it in your ears?
This feeling has started to subside now but it felt like my left ear was going to start working again although it hasn't. My right ear is still not right, it keeps popping, I explained this to my doctor and he didn't even check my ears?.
