Hi all my first post
my wife has been in ICU For over 4 weeks now with
bacterial meningitis.septicemia.staphyA
She's been off her sleeping medication for a few weeks now but shes not waking up very good she can move one arm only and the odd twitch of her legs she has her eyes open but looks confused and doesn't seem to know us the only bit of hope we have is she smiles at the kids.i spend every spare minute with her it is so hard seeing her in this situation
the Doctors have been great but there's no magic solution for what her recovery will be i hope she can get some recovery but its looking very bleak for her
its a nightmare and more so as people didn't listen to us when we said she was ill
by the time they did Listen it was too late and she had to be rushed to ICU
Thanks

RE: Our Meningitis Recovery Nightmare

Thanks for the Reply's its been a long time
My wife eventually came home after a long time in ICU And having Rehab the Doctors did a great job in saving her life, she suffered lots of muscle wastage having been bed ridden for weeks and weeks and weeks and major 3rd degree bed sore she has memory loss she cant remember lots of things especially recent things tomorrow she wont know what she did today
she has ICU neuropathy she cant hold things has no feeling in her hands, constant itching of her back it drives her crazy.continent problems, walking problems she cant do her meds food washing etc we have regular rehab physio hydro pool sessions etc me and the family are 24/7 carers we'll get there getting her right.in her self she's ok as such after what happened its just her body is broken and needs years to recover they say. Thanks take care and if a doctor tells you on numerous visits a stiff neck and redness is just a trapped nerve they might be wrong..

Helo Dene,
Was so sorry to hear of your wifes nightnare with Meningitis.I had same in Jan 2008.I am so glad she is on her ewat to recovery. Please please use the wondeful support from the Trust -it has been my lifeline.Counseeling is alo availbale.

The more I read others experinces the more I realise how shocking the stste of diagnosis is.Doctors just dont seem to listen!I even had every sigh of meniongitis and septicaemia and casuaulty doctor still sent me home for a good nights sleep! It seem to happen more with adults.

pLEASE KNOW that you are not alone and that though M has channged your lives forever ,feel blessed to have pulled through. If you'dlike to chat,I am a 1-2-1 volunteer,so all you need to do is contact trust and they can give deatails.

Wishing you and your wife very best wishes and hang on in there!
