Gift Aid and Tax Relief

Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis, supports the use of Gift Aid as a way of increasing your donation to us. He says:

“Gift Aid is an absolute no-brainer. If you’re giving money to the Meningitis Trust, use Gift Aid - it gets an extra 25p per pound on top. There’s nothing dodgy; it’s a scheme which means the charity can get your tax back from the government, and it doesn’t cost you a penny. So unless you’re not a UK taxpayer, simply provide your name, address and declare that you’re a UK taxpayer and you get to give much more cash, without much more cost. Simple!”

As you will appreciate the additional money we would receive through Gift Aid would be an enormous boost to the funding of our support services, helping us to continue to be there to support the thousands of people who have been affected by meningitis.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can also reclaim additional tax relief on the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40% and the basic rate of tax at 20% against the donations you have made. You can then choose to donate this additional money to the Meningitis Trust.

To be eligible for Gift Aid you need to be a UK tax payer and pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April one year to 5 April the next) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that the Meningitis Trust will reclaim.  The Meningitis Trust will reclaim tax against all the donations you have made in the last four years and on all future donations you may make until you notify us otherwise.
