Craigavon mum organises fancy dress disco for charity
14 October 2009
Sheena Cardwell, whose daughter, Katie, contracted meningitis last year, is organising a fancy dress party in aid of the Meningitis Trust.
Sheena chose to support the Trust because of the support it provided to her and her family. Sheena says, “We were devastated when the doctors confirmed that Katie had meningitis. It is one of those diseases that every parent fears. I was aware of the symptoms of meningitis but never thought it would happen to us. Thankfully, after a long and difficult journey, Katie was released from hospital. The support and guidance we had from the Meningitis Trust was so helpful. I don’t think we could have dealt with it as well if we didn’t have their help!”
The Meningitis Trust is the primary UK provider of professional services and community-based support for people affected by meningitis. Meningitis can affect anyone, of any age, at any time. It can strike in an instant, but its impact can last a lifetime. The charity helps around 20,000 people each year through its range of specialist services; giving vital support to those who have been affected by this life-changing disease.
Sheena says, “Because of the support we received from the Meningitis Trust we are organising the disco. We want to warn others of this disease and make sure everyone knows that the Meningitis Trust is there for anyone who has been affected by meningitis.”
With as many as 13,900 people living in Northern Ireland who have had either viral or bacterial meningitis and up to one adult in every four knowing someone who has had meningitis, the charity’s ongoing work is much-needed. The Trust relies solely on voluntary donations to continue its work, so fundraising like the fancy dress party is vital to its future.
The event takes place on October 24 at The Woodville Arms, Lurgan. As well as the fancy dress disco there will be great raffle prizes on offer. Tickets cost £5 and are available from The Woodville Arms. Any donations of raffle prizes from local business would be greatly appreciated.
