Local lady encourages community to get involved in walk
11 September 2009
Kimberley Nurtney, from Over Hulton in Bolton, is appealing for walkers to join her and many others on September 20 for a Sunday morning sponsored walk through Heaton Park in Manchester, to raise funds for the Meningitis Trust.
Registration is in the picnic area (next to the north car park) from 10.30 for an 11.00 start. New Ambassador for the Trust, Julie Hesmondhalgh who plays Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, is hopefully popping along too to show her support.
As well as getting the family sponsored to do it, dogs (on leads) can also join in – and they can be sponsored as well! They are all fun and easy walks for the whole family and are a great day out for all. It couldn’t be easier to raise the vital funds for the charity, which helps anyone whose life has been turned upside down by meningitis.
The course is suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. You can chose to walk the 1.5k or 5k route around the park; tailoring the walk to your ability. This is a great walk through formal parkland with fascinating features and great views. There are many places to visit after the walk, including the formal gardens, animal centre and farm, 18th century Heaton Hall, Orangery and Temple plus many other exciting attractions, making it a great day out for the whole family. Don’t forget your picnic!
Kimberley says of her motivation to do the walk; “Almost a year ago, my two month old niece died from meningitis. My family’s experience has meant that we are now supporting the Meningitis Trust as we don't wish anyone else to go through what we have. They are dependant on the support of individuals and organisations to raise the funds that they need to continue their work, so our participation in the walk is making a difference.”
Kimberley continues; “I would encourage everyone in the area to take part or to simply give a donation to the Trust – their work is invaluable. They have helped our family in so many ways!”
The Meningitis Trust is dedicated to providing practical and emotional support to anyone affected by the disease. Every year it helps around 20,000 people through its range of professional support services; including counselling, 24-hour freephone helpline, one-to-one contacts, financial support grants and home visits. It is also committed to raising awareness of meningitis and its signs and symptoms by producing and distributing millions of pieces of information material for free.
Registration is simple, just visit http://www.meningitis-trust.org/walking/documents/walkintheparkbooklet.pdf complete the form and post it along with your registration fee (£6/adult, £4/child, dogs free) to the freepost address given.
