Leeds group to celebrate 10th anniversary

11 August 2009

After ten successful years and £55,000 of fundraising, the Meningitis Trust’s Leeds Community Help Group is holding its 10th anniversary on September 18 at Elland Road Football Stadium at 7.00pm with a buffet, disco and raffle.

The group is asking people to come along to the event to find out how they can help and support the 6000 people who could be struggling to cope with the impact of meningitis in Leeds.

Anyone affected by the disease in the area is also being urged to come along and make meet the group. The group doesn’t want people to suffer in silence – it can offer help and support immediately, and direct people to the free support services of the Meningitis Trust.

The group formed in September 1999 after a group of people affected by meningitis in the Leeds and York area came together. The group officially became the Leeds Community Help Group at the beginning of 2007 as the group just had members from Leeds in it. The group is essential to help those who have been affected by meningitis in Leeds.

The group has done various fundraising events over the years, having raised more than £55,000 for the Meningitis Trust. It has organised its own local promotions, helped the Trust’s regional Community Development Officer, Matt Clarke, in numerous ways and more importantly, supported those affected by meningitis.

Sheel Douglas-Bharj, who has been part of the group since it began, says: “Over the last ten years we have established an informal, friendly group. Our aim for the future is to continue with our good work and success. We are always looking to welcome new members and anybody interested in celebrating is more than welcome to come along.”

If you are interested in learning more about the Community Help Group, or would like to go along to the evening, please contact the Trust’s Matt Clarke on 0845 120 4763 or email matthewc@meningitis-trust.org .
