Meningitis Trust legendary Three Peak Challenge

28 January 2010

The UK’s only charity to offer a range of free professional services and community based support for people affected by meningitis is calling for adrenaline junkies across the UK to come together and climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Meningitis Trust is organising its 13th year of its Three Peaks Challenges; one 36-hour and one 24-hour.

The 36 hour challenge on July 9 – 11, 2010, will start off at Snowdon in North Wales. Participants will then be taken by coach to the bottom of Scafell in the Lake District - to trek Scafell in the dark! Finally the team will be whisked up to Scotland to climb the highest of the three mountains, Ben Nevis. The 24-hour challenge on September 10 -12, 2010, will include the same three climbs but in reverse order.

Over the past 12 years that the Trust has run this event, 1,206 participants have taken part, raising almost £900,000. And as the charity relies solely on donations to continue its work, the Three Peaks Challenges have been vital to its future.

Tess Osman, from Wiltshire, who took part in the 36-hour event in May this year, says; “I had a fab weekend with a great team of people. It was fantastically organised”

Sarah Langton, Events Organiser at the Meningitis Trust, says; “The Three Peaks challenge is one of the Trust’s oldest and most successful events, with an amazing safety team and comradely spirit across the weekend. I can guarantee participants will have a very memorable time”.

The Meningitis Trust needs constant help to raise money to pay for the professional services and community support it provides, which are a lifeline for people affected by meningitis. It offers practical, emotional and financial support through its range of free support services. More than 20,000 people are helped by the Meningitis Trust each year - with more than 500,000 people living in the UK today who have had either viral or bacterial meningitis, its ongoing work is vital.
