Hajj Campaign
Muslims in the UK are being urged by the Meningitis Trust to ensure they are immunised against meningitis as part of their preparations for their Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia. For an MP3 of this alert, click here. This MP3 file has been produced to remind pilgrims of the dangers of meningitis and how they can protect themselves and others against the disease by contacting us and getting more information. We would like to wish all those attending the Hajj, a safe and peaceful pilgrimage.
Black and minority ethnic campaign
Research shows us that black and minority ethnic (BME) communities are missing out on vital meningitis information and support services. The research found that many respondents didn’t think meningitis affected their ethnic group – a misunderstanding we fear may cost lives.
What we are doing:
- National BME co-ordinator
- Freephone 24-hour nurse-led helpline with access to translation into over a hundred languages
- Using ethnic specific media to raise awareness of meningitis
- Peer Educators will be working across the UK – the scheme is running successfully in Gloucestershire and the project is ongoing
- Working closely with organisations, agencies and established groups within BME communities to spread awareness of meningitis and to identify those who are suffering and need our help
- Working with community leaders and consulting with communities
- Breaking down communication barriers and building confidence and trust in our services
- Giving our staff members diversity training to ensure they understand the issues facing BME communities
- We have produced bilingual awareness materials in 6 key languages – Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu, Bengali, Cantonese and Polish.
