About the Trust
Our funding
Meningitis strikes in an instant, but the impact lasts a lifetime. We intend to be here in the long term for those affected. To do that, we are dependent on individuals and organisations, from whom we get almost all of our funding. Most of this is raised through voluntary donations and a range of fundraising activities, together with support from corporates and charitable trusts.

Individuals raise funds in so many different ways, taking part in a fundraising activity organised by the Trust, or organising their own activity. The personal commitment and effort that people put in, no matter how big or small the event is, never ceases to amaze us. But without our supporters we would not be able to continue our work. For some of those raising funds, it is also their own way of fighting back against a personal experience of meningitis.

We have recently launched our Tribute Funds, providing a route for people to raise funds & donate money in memory of a loved one. Friends of the Meningitis Trust enables people to support us on a regular basis and keep in touch with the work we do. Individuals remembering us in their wills provide a valuable source of income.

Some of the companies that have supported us over the years:

Focus DIY have supported the Trust since it began in 1986, including funding the first paid member of staff. In 2006, Focus raised over £170,000 through the sale of pin badges and the annual fun day in stores across the UK.

Halfords is a new partnership for the Trust, fundraising across the UK and Ireland. The Chief Executive recently undertook a 120 mile cycle challenge with colleagues and raised over £25k.

The largest corporate partnership in the Trust’s 21 years was with Somerfield, raising £1.5m in 2002.

Shoezone supported our Toddle Waddle event for 2 years and helped to raise funds and awareness through their stores.

Shepherds and Hesco Bastion supported the efforts of the Commando Joe team rowing the Atlantic in 2006, helping the team raise over £250k so far.

Partnership with Sainsbury in 1998 helped raise over £400,000.

Donaldsons have supported the Trust for the last two years in all their offices and shopping centres, helping to fund our counselling work.

Zurich Independent Financial Advisors have raised funds and provided volunteers for local events.

Pets at Home raised funds through all of their stores.

ICAP raised over £100,000 for the Trust in one day.

Community organisations play a vital part in generating the funds we need. Schools, universities and Women's Institutes are just some of those that help us.

Trust and grant givers provide funds for a varied range of projects. These include:

Scottish Executive – helping to fund our support work in Scotland
Northern Ireland Big Lottery – funding community nurses in Northern Ireland
Lloyds TSB Foundation – funding literature in different languages for the BME population

It is getting increasingly difficult to raise the funds we need and we are grateful to all the people and organisations that continue to support us. These funds enable us to undertake our support, awareness & education and research work, making a difference to people’s lives.

Ethical Policy
The Meningitis Trust is a member of the Fundraising Standards Board and complies with all current legislation in the UK and Ireland. We endeavour to follow best practice in all that we do, following guidance from the Charity Commission, Institute of Fundraising and other relevant bodies.

The charity makes every effort not to knowingly accept or solicit funds from organisations involved in arms trading or production/sole distribution of tobacco.

The charity remains independent from organisations and individuals who support us. We reserve the right to express our views even where these may be in conflict and/or to comment where we do not believe that the interests of our beneficiaries are being appropriately served.
