After meningitis and septicaemia

Meningitis can strike in an instant, but its impact can last a lifetime. We know that meningitis and septicaemia can turn your world upside down.

Most people know very little about meningitis until they are affected by it, and, for many, the suddenness of the disease and the speed with which it develops is both shocking and overwhelming. After-effects and complications can happen with any type of meningitis, but are more common with bacterial meningitis.

Key facts:

• Most people will make a good recovery from meningitis and septicaemia.
• 10% of cases result in death.
• 15% of those who survive meningitis will be left with severe after-effects including brain damage, hearing and sight loss and where septicaemia has occurred, limb loss and scarring.
• Many survivors of meningitis will be left with invisible, but life-changing after-effects, such as memory loss, tiredness, behavioural and emotional problems, depression and piercing headaches.
• Some after-effects are short term, however, some will last a lifetime.

What we can do for you

• You can talk to our experienced staff about any questions or concerns you might have. They can explain the kind of help we can offer or simply be there to listen.
• Our community team, including nurses, works all over the UK ensuring help is close by.
• After leaving hospital we can arrange a home visit to let you talk about your experience and tell you about the ways we can offer support. In somecircumstances, it may be possible to arrange a visit in hospital before discharge.
• We work with a range of specialist professionals to provide emotional, practical and financial support whenever it is needed, for as long as it is needed. We never want anyone to suffer alone.
• We can provide counselling, creative therapies, financial support grants and provide the opportunity for people who have had a similar experience to support each other, by phone, e-mail or through our on-line communities such as facebook.
• We are here to help anyone affected by meningitis, when you need us, for as long as you need us.
