About the Trust

International work

Meningitis is a worldwide issue. The Trust has an operational charity providing services and support for everyone affected by meningitis in Ireland. Around 300 cases of bacterial meningitis are reported in Ireland every year and there are probably more than double that number of cases of viral meningitis. Beyond the UK and Ireland, the Trust works with partners on a range of activities including:

CoMO (the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations) is a global network of individuals and organisations involved with meningitis, and facilitates the sharing of information and ideas. It has a global mission to assist member organisations to be sustainable, identifiable and influential sources for information and support services for people affected by meningitis in their regions and united in their endeavours globally through their membership of CoMO.
 
The Trust is a founding member of CoMO and holds Vice Presidency - leading on membership development and support. It shares expertise, resources and information with members outside the UK to assist them with their development in fighting against meningitis and ensuring support for those affected.

Burkina Faso
- We have helped AMP to provide a mobile laboratory to assist with early identification of the disease in an epidemic to enable rapid treatment with vaccines.

Nigeria - We have produced posters for health clinics working with local health professionals operating the clinics.

Gambia - We are working with a leading paediatrician on some research into awareness of meningitis.

Hungary - The Trust carried out a training programme for nurse trainers from Hungary, who went back and implemented a full local education programme.
