Please ReTweet Me for Eurovision?

We're delighted to see Engelbert Humperdinck will be in this year's Eurovision. Maybe he'll sing our version on the night...

The crooner’s 40-year old classic, “Release Me”, has been reworked as a social media music video, named “Please ReTweet Me”, to help spread the word about meningitis and get behind The Hump in time for Saturday’s competition.

The song includes lines about Facebook, Foursquare and Google to grab the attention of internet-savvy youngsters and alert them to the dangers of meningitis.

An average of 3,400 cases of bacterial meningitis are reported every year in the UK. 10 per cent of people will die and up to 40 per cent will be left with after-effects which can be as severe as brain damage, loss of hearing and sight. Where septicaemia has occurred this can result in loss of limbs and scarring. By engaging with more people online, the Trust hopes that the song “Please ReTweet Me” will raise life-saving awareness of a killer disease.

“Release Me” was a hit for Engelbert Humperdink in 1967 when it reached number one in the charts and remained there for six weeks. More than 40 years on and the new version has its tongue firmly in its cheek.

The social media anthem was recorded by the Drybrook Male Voice Choir in the Forest of Dean by production company Atticus Finch, which makes music videos for stars including Moby and George Michael.

The Hump has already revealed his support for the project when he spoke to the Leicester Mercury.

The Eurovision star said: "I think it's a great thing if it's going to help the charity's work and it would be nice to have it back in the charts. And why not change the words? I didn't write it myself but I knew the late Eddie Miller, who did write it, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind."
