We know that our credit-card sized symptoms cards are life-saving, but it’s always wonderful to hear when they do their job and help people spot the signs of the disease.
One of our supporters, Susan Dimmock from Bradford, didn’t think by handing out our signs and symptoms cards in her local town recently, that she’d be helping to save the life of a little girl over Christmas. Susan, who lost her son, Shaun, to the disease in 2007, is an active supporter of ours and was giving out our symptoms cards to passers by before the festive break.
Then recently a local Mum approached her to ask if she was the lady who was handing out the Trust symptoms cards before Christmas. She told Susan that her little girl had recently fallen ill and she knew something wasn’t right. She remembered she had been given a signs and symptoms card, which she’d put straight in her bag. Finding the card, she found her daughter was displaying symptoms of meningitis, so she sent for an ambulance straight away.
We are delighted to say that her daughter survived meningitis, however, if it wasn’t for our symptoms card, it may have been a different story. It just shows how such a small card can make such a huge difference. Susan has helped another family not have to go through the heartbreak of losing a loved one to meningitis – something Susan and her family know only too well after their loss of son, Shaun.
